Origen of Alexandria (185 - 254 A.D.) is recognized as one of the greatest thinkers of early Christianity. He was head of a n important neoplatonisttheological school, where he succeeded Clement.

Only eight books of his Commentaries on the Gospel of St Matthew remain. Written towards the end of his life after Origen had fled Alexandria and settled in Palestine, they reflect the mature thought of a great mind.
